3 Ideals that resonate with me from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) code of ethics.

NAEYC

I 1.1 To be familiar with the knowledge base of early childhood care and education and to stay informed through continuing education and training.  (2005, April)

* This ideal relates to me professionally because it is the foundation for any educator and professional in the field. This code is the reason that I decided to enroll in school and obtain a master's degree in early childhood without even knowing it existed. As an educator that is starting to advance in my career I need to become knowledgeable about the field, growing concerns, changes and be able to effectively help find solutions.

I-2.2—To develop relationships of mutual trust and create partnerships with the families we serve.  (2005, April)

* I believe that trust is the most valuable tool you can receive from a family. This trust has to be formed and begins with open communication, honesty, and the physical care children receive from professionals.

I-3A.3—To support co-workers in meeting their professional needs and in their professional development.  (2005, April)

* As an early childhood professional, I know that it is the work of a team. In my center I lead the professionals who interact with the children and families the most. It is a part of my position to train them and ensure that all professional standards are met.

DEC

Professional and Interpersonal Behavior
 2. We shall demonstrate the highest standards of personal integrity, truthfulness, and honesty in all our professional activities in order to inspire the trust and confidence of the children and families and of those with whom we work. (2000, August)

* This standard coincides with my feelings of holding oneself in the highest regard professionally and adhering to positive conduct that will effect the relationships with co-workers and families. Being a professional and providing excellent customer service are my top priority in my center.

Enhancement of Children's Families Quality of Lives
 1. We shall demonstrate our respect and concern for children, families, colleagues, and others with whom we work, honoring their beliefs, values, customs, languages, and culture. (2000, August)

* This code resonates with me as a professional but more so as a person. Respect is a basic right that I believe all people should receive. As a professional we must be able to see differences and respect them it is a part of presenting professional behavior. I work at a center with families of very diverse backgrounds, cultures and religions due to us serving military families. With this being stated one must be open and respectful to everyone.

Responsive Family Centered Practice
 6.  We shall respect families’ rights to choose or refuse early childhood special education or related services. (2000, August)

* As a person I believe respect goes both ways from one individual to another and vice versa. Professionally I have had to still show respect for families when decisions were made that I did not agree with. Every family has a right to choose and sometimes as educators we may disagree with their decisions however we must still do our jobs with diligence and in a professional manner with respect the rights of families.
