Professional Goals, Hopes and Dreams

Whether it be from parents, teachers or politicians early childhood centers and programs are up for discussion. It may be about the lack of access, the price of care or the quality in question. I have noticed that in my area and former line of work (military installation) it was the quality of the center that was the headline. Every center I have worked has been seen as "babysitters" and the quality was not viewed in high regard as those that were outside of the base and around the same price if not cheaper than what our higher paying customers were paying. Quality is more often than not, focused around what curriculum the child is receiving and concerned with academics. When a center is centered around child development and play, it is seen as lacking in quality because parents and politicians want children to be kindergarten ready.

The opportunity for professional development exists here for myself as well as colleagues in my past and future. I am currently in the process of continuing my education to learn more about the early childhood field and become a better educator. With this, I will be an advocate for this domain in education as well as teach the professionals that I lead, so that we can take more pride in our work and be more confident in what we do and how we do it when speaking to and teaching the families that we serve. This will help with my professional hope that the value of early childhood will increase and be viewed as important. I want to see an early childhood world where the minimum educational standard is and Associate's degree, and all educators are compensated more for their time and efforts placed into carrying out their duties.

  1. Hi Annierose,

I know in my area quality is also the headline topic when discussing childcare. My current place of employment has been working on trying to gain more quality to make sure that children are getting the best care that they can. But I've also noticed that my center is losing a lot of kids because our prices have risen and given current times, many parents can't afford the pay raise. It makes me worry for the future a bit because if you start requiring things like degrees for your staff, the pay needs to reflect that. But that means the cost of the care needs to go up which means many parents will be without the care they may desperately need. It makes you think about how we need to work on quality of care but also making the quality care more affordable to everyone.

  2. Hey, High quality care is so important for children. It is not enough to demand high-quality education for young children; we also must ensure that educators are provided with affordable high-quality training and education opportunities. Early childhood educators dedicate their life’s work to nurturing, educating and caring for young children. Only the most effective teachers and staff can ensure children in their care have the early experiences they need to be more likely to succeed in school, read on grade level and graduate on time.

  3. Hey, I completely agree all educators should compensated more for their time and efforts placed into carrying out their duties. More compensation would encourage educators to remain in the field. They would feel better appreciated for all their hard work and determination. Great post!

  4. Heeeey Annierose! I enjoyed reading your post. Thank you so much for sharing your insights with us. You made so good valid points. As ECE professionals, we go above and beyond to create an environment that is loving and nurturing as well as rigorous and challenging to advance the enhancement of each of our babies. I agree we should be compensated for our efforts and determination to produce the world's next intellectuals. We are the most essential but the least compensated. Our duties are very demanding and important and higher wages would definitely inspire other educators to continue to make a difference in the lives of our scholars and their families. Blessings to you Queen on your journey, to make a positive impact in this world.
